Three Reasons to Choose a USB Keyboard Over a Serial Keyboard

You can connect keyboards to your computer in two ways: via a serial port and via a USB port. For a keyboard with a serial cable, you will need to attach it to a serial port on your computer. All desktop computers have one serial port specially designated for a serial keyboard. For USB keyboards, you will need a free USB slot on your computer. USB computer keyboards offer several advantages over serial keyboards. Here are some reasons why it is better to buy a USB keyboard instead of a serial keyboard.

* Plug-N-Play

USB keyboards are plug-n-play computer devices. This means that you can simply plug them into a free USB port on your computer and you can immediately begin using and typing on your keyboard. If you accidentally unplug your USB keyboard, you can simply plug it right back in and resume what you were doing.

Serial keyboards do not offer this convenience. If a serial keyboard is knocked loose from its serial port or transferred to another computer system, the host computer needs to be rebooted after you attach the serial cord in order to recognize the hardware device. If not restarted, the computer will not be able to place the serial keyboard and you will not be able to use it.

* More Placement Options

With USB keyboards, you have the option of attaching it wherever a USB port is located on your computer. Computers usually have a set of USB ports at the back and another set in front of the computer chassis or at the side. If you are short on cable, you can attach your USB cable at a front or side USB port to enjoy a longer reach.

Serial keyboards, on the other hand, only have one option when it comes to connections. They need to be attached to the keyboard serial port on your computer and this is located at the back of the unit. This limits the location and reach of your keyboard. With a short cable, your serial keyboard cannot be placed too far from your computer.

How Useful Are Wireless Keyboards

* Wireless Support

If you are into wireless gadgets, you definitely need a USB keyboard. For the moment, wireless keyboards can only be connected to the computer via USB ports.Serial keyboards are slowly being phased out but they are still prevalent in many computers. There is really no noticeable speed deficiency in serial keyboards although USB ports can transfer data at a faster rate than serial ports. USB keyboards nonetheless are the norm today.
